Albany Senior High School proudly celebrated 50 years of NAIDOC with a powerful and memorable week of events, embracing this year’s theme: “The Next Generation – Strength. Vision. Legacy.”
The celebrations began with the 2025 NAIDOC Assembly, a standout event on our school calendar, showcasing the strength, pride, and cultural richness of our students and the wider ASHS community. Talented students took to the stage with heartfelt cultural dance performances, joined by the inspirational Moodiji Nop dance group. One of our own students added to the atmosphere with a stirring didgeridoo performance that resonated deeply with everyone present.
We were honoured to welcome Uncle Lindsay Dean, who spoke passionately about this year’s theme and led a traditional smoking ceremony. Every student had the opportunity to participate in this important cultural practice, stepping outside together in unity and respect. The assembly was a powerful reminder of the importance of culture, community, and connection, with our students showing immense courage, pride, and respect.
Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in a range of cultural activities during Kooinda and break times – including dot painting, damper sharing, and the ever-popular NAIDOC Chain Competition.
And speaking of the chain competition… our students took this very seriously! There was drama (broken chains, heated measuring debates, and even a links-vs-length controversy). In the end, we couldn’t split the difference. Both classes earned the crown in their own way:
Class 7.2 – an incredible 56 metres long with 621 links
Class 7.3 – an impressive 47 metres long with 1112 links
A huge congratulations to both classes, you are officially joint winners! Prizes are on the way!
We also hosted a vibrant community expo, bringing together local businesses and organisations to share knowledge, celebrate culture, and strengthen community ties.
The week concluded on a high with the much-anticipated Staff vs Students NAIDOC basketball clash. The game was fast-paced and full of energy, with Marley and Robbie sinking impressive three-pointers to give the students an early lead. Mr Thorpe shone for the teachers, but the students proved too strong, running rings around their opponents and securing a convincing win. The crowd was kept entertained from start to finish, with plenty of skill, speed, and team spirit on display.
A heartfelt thank you to all students, staff, and community members who contributed to making NAIDOC Week 2025 such a meaningful and memorable celebration. Together, we honour the past, empower the present, and inspire the next generation.
