Albany SHS Year 7 students ventured up Koorntarup/Mt Clarence to explore the cultural and historical significance of this special place to the Menang Noongar people. We were privileged to be joined by Menang elders Aunty Vernice Gillies and Uncle Larry Blight, who shared insights into how the first Australians used the land for food, medicine, and shelter.
Students also listened to creation stories and learned about the archaeological history of the area. Candice Matthews and Aunty Mandi Khan spoke about the dual naming of many prominent landmarks around Kinjarling/Albany, deepening students’ understanding of local heritage.
The weather was fine, though a little windy, and students left with a richer appreciation of Aboriginal culture and the history of the place where they learn, play, and live.
