Albany SHS Visual Arts students had the privilege of collaborating with professional artists to create a sculpture for the WIRIN WAY, Menang-led, community-driven installation at Binalup. During the workshop, students reflected on their connection to Country and place by making a small sculptural object that will form part of a collaborative “community timeline.”
The timeline installation will culminate in a major exhibition at Sculpture at Binalup (April 2026), before finding a permanent home at the Albany Historic Society gardens, providing an enduring cultural legacy.
This presented a special opportunity for our students to contribute their voices and creativity to Albany’s cultural narrative, while learning alongside professional artists and learning about connection to country, and Wirin Way by listening to Aunty Carol Pettersen OAM JP.
Students thoroughly enjoyed each session and are excited that their voices will be displayed alongside professional artists' sculptures. They look forward to finding their sculptures nestled among 300 more, each representing approximately 200 years of the 65,000 years of continuous First Nations custodianship at Binalup alongside 200 years of colonial history in Albany.
