This year's Country Week carnival saw a return to normal programming. It took place in June, and pre-pandemic numbers of participants attended.
The Albany SHS contingent was the biggest of the carnival, with 157 students and 16 staff attending. A massive effort from all involved. From the bus drivers to the coaches, the staff who have had to shepherd students into meeting school values and expectations, to finally, the students and their parents. It is a massive exercise for the entire ASHS community. An effort that we are ever so grateful for.
Without dragging this article out for too long, our students' behaviour, commitment, enthusiasm, and pride were phenomenal. ASHS Country Week is a truly incredible thing to experience. An event where we get to witness our students not just display but also highlight the core ethics and values we as a community have spent much time and effort shaping. Well done, ASHS!
Overall, the ASHS placed second (yes to Bunbury SHS again!) in the Tier 1 Champion School. However, we nearly halved the winning margin from 2022. A more positive aspect of this performance is that of the 157 participants we took away, 114 are eligible to attend next year! An extremely positive outlook for 2024. Another very encouraging point of view is that we achieved this second place overall by only being in one 1st vs 2nd playoff in an individual sport. The majority of our 14 teams were in 3 vs 4 playoffs. A fantastic and consistent effort from the squad and school. This is further evidence of our philosophy that overall success is more important than the success of an individual team or individual.
Without going into extreme detail, I thank the Country Week Fundraising Sub-Committee within the ASHS P&C, who raised significant funds to offset the cost for our students. Deb Guest, you are a Saint for coordinating this committee and the Lunch Tent during country week. To the 14 Coaches and assistants, your time, effort, and support is superb. I am eternally grateful for your contribution.
Lastly, to the students, your school and your community, thank you for representing the Albany community with a plomb and building our school's brand. Well done!
