Report by Kleo Proudfoot, Year 8
The 2020 Netball WA High School cup was a well-organised event and, lucky for us, the sun came out for the day, after a week of rain! Representing Albany SHS were 6 Teams, 3 Boy’s teams from Years 9, 10 and 11/12 and 3 Girl’s teams from years 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12, as well as the Certificate II Sport Coaching students taking on coaching and umpiring roles.
ASHS was up against some great competition with teams from Jerramungup, Denmark, Narrogin, NASHS, St Joseph’s College, Bethel Christian College, Great Southern Grammar, Gnowangerup, Mount Barker, Katanning and as far away as Esperance. We had some close games throughout the day, but most of all, we had fun taking part and meeting people from other schools, especially after many carnivals had been cancelled due to COVID19 this year.
Everyone put in a great effort, and we had some super close games. The Year 11/12 girls and Year 11/12 boys played well all day to make their respective grand finals. The boys fought well but got pipped at the post, going down to Grammar by 1 point, to end up Runner-up champions. The girls had better luck in a tough, physical match against NASHS. They were the overall Champions after a 5 Goal win.
Students from ASHS showed great sportsmanship and fantastic behaviour throughout the day, and we look forward to participating again next year.
