Mixed Media Self Portraits

This semester, our innovative Year 9 Visual Arts Discovery students have spent a great amount of time analysing themselves in mirrors and taking photos of themselves. They have been working to develop their observation drawing skills by completing portraits in both pencil and then an expressive image using ballpoint pen, spray paint and oil sticks.

Inspired by WA artist Andy Quilty, students were presented with the challenge of drawing freehand with ballpoint pen directly onto paper to create 2D imagery with sculptural qualities.

Students thoroughly enjoyed bring the image together using paper stencils to block out their drawing to then apply a spray painted background using patterned stencils to create a contrast between foreground and background.
