Our Year 9 students recently had the exciting opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the real world during their Career Taster Experience at Southern Ports. This was no ordinary excursion — students were given a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the region’s most vital industries.
The day began with an engaging overview of the wide range of career pathways available at the port, including marine operations, logistics, environmental management, engineering, and administration. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted just how many roles exist within a single organisation.
One of the highlights was an exclusive tour of the port facilities, including areas that are usually off-limits to the public. Students witnessed the scale of operations and the collaboration required to keep everything running smoothly.
The standout moment of the day? Boarding a tug boat as it prepared to guide a massive international vessel out to sea! Watching the crew in action and experiencing the power and precision of the tug boat up close left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
This experience not only broadened students’ understanding of career possibilities but also sparked curiosity and inspiration for their futures.
