On Sunday, 26 October, three of Albany Senior High School’s top Year 12 basketballers travelled to Perth to compete in the School Sport WA Tri Series All-Star Games.
The All-Star competition brings together representative teams from IGSSA (Independent Girls School Sport WA), School Sport WA (SSWA), and the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) in a showcase of elite secondary school talent. Selection into these teams is considered a significant achievement, with athletes chosen for their outstanding performance and potential pathways into elite sport.
Our students were selected by Basketball WA and School Sport WA officials during Country Week in June, recognised for their leadership, skill, and impact on the court.
Ashton was selected from the Boys 2025 Country Week team for his athleticism, strength, and leadership. His energy, focus, and defensive intensity were key contributions, alongside his ability to create scoring opportunities.
Dakota was chosen for her high basketball IQ and versatile offensive skillset. As both school and team captain, she consistently led from the front, impressing selectors with her ball handling, smart shot selection, and scoring efficiency.
Keely earned her place through her dominance in the paint at bothends, both offensively and defensively. Her scoring around the basket and elite rim protection — averaging nearly four blocks per game — made her a standout performer.
All three athletes represented Albany SHS and the government school sector with pride. The SSWA girls team emerged as champions after a hard-fought match against ACC, with both Keely and Dakota praised by the head coach for their adaptability, scoring ability, and defensive strength. Their performance confirmed their potential to compete in the NBL1 D League in 2026.
Ashton played a strong game for the boys team, holding his own against significantly taller NBL and NBL1 development players. The team narrowly lost to ACC by fewer than ten points.
In addition to the student achievements, Country Week girls coach Ms Benson was invited to join the SSWA girls team as assistant coach, furthering her development and paving the way for future Albany SHS athletes to participate in the All-Star Games.
This was an invaluable experience for our students, both on and off the court. As they prepare to move to Perth next year to pursue academic and sporting opportunities, the relationships built with coaches, staff, and fellow athletes will serve them well.
Congratulations to Ashton, Keely, and Dakota on their outstanding achievements.
