Our Year 9 and 10 Gifted and Talented students recently took part in a dynamic Model United Nations workshop, facilitated by the United Nations Youth Association. Over the course of the day, students were assigned countries to represent and engaged in spirited debate on a range of pressing global issues—from preventing poaching to combating the spread of misinformation.
The workshop began with an insightful introduction to the language, structure, and processes of the UN Security Council. Armed with this foundational knowledge, students stepped confidently into the roles of international diplomats. They presented their country's positions, negotiated alliances, proposed amendments, and, in the case of major powers like China, Russia, and the United States, even exercised the power of veto.
This immersive experience pushed students to collaborate strategically, think critically under pressure, and refine their public speaking skills in a high-stakes, real-world simulation. They approached the challenge with maturity, creativity, and a touch of humour—though one delegation (which shall remain unnamed) made a spirited case that misinformation could be justified as a tool for maintaining social control.
It was an engaging and thought-provoking day of learning, and we are immensely proud of how thoughtfully and confidently our students represented their assigned nations on the world stage.
