The Year 8, 9 and 10 Marine Science students have been surveying the estuarine environment of the Albany region and have recorded some interesting events over the years.
This year, we have watched the marine heatwave unfold off the W.A. coast as it sent warm water down towards Albany on the Leeuwin Current and documented the changes in fish populations in Oyster Harbour through the different seasons.
We have studied the vulnerability of marine ecosystems during these warming events and have established our own seagrass meadow at Emu Point, in recognition of the importance of this marine plant in stabilising the sand and foreshore and promoting biodiversity.
A recent storm from the south coincided with a Spring tide to bring large swells towards our coast, resulting in a large dump of seagrass on our beaches.
This short clip tells some of our story.
